You have to know, if you read it, that the Torah (the old testament like you call it) ends just before the entering of the People of Israel in the Land of Israel... So you will not read too about the Temple, King David etc. too...
In the Tanach (I do not know the name of these books in English, but the one who talks about the Temples, the Prophets etc.) you will find a few sentences about this wall, that was build by the poor people, and that G-d said will never be destroyed...

No, never had the luxury of visiting Israel. It would be my first choice of countries to visit however.

Wow. I believe you! I know what you mean about feeling something "in the air". I get that other places, situations.
